Asif is a Director within Protiviti's Risk & Compliance Practice and has over ten (10) of experience focusing on regulatory matters for Financial Services Institutions. Asif has a subject matter expertise in the Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering and Sanctions compliance. He has performed extensive work with top tier financial institutions to address regulatory enforcement actions and improve AML operations.
Asif has also led various engagements including regulatory remediations, large scale money laundering investigations and Know Your Customer (“KYC”) remediation projects (e.g., Lookbacks), Office of Foreign Assets Control (“OFAC”) Lookback, 352 USA PATRIOT Act full-scope BSA/AML and Sanctions audits for various large financial institutions (e.g., some of the top 5 US banks, retail, commercial, private, investment, and community banks, broker-dealers, Money Services Businesses (MSBs), investment advisors, and mutual funds) execution of gap analyses, assessments of AML monitoring and global sanctions screening systems, and investigation for mortgage loans and Home Equity Line of Credit and reviewed customer’s files to determine sufficiency of KYC for a large international bank.
In addition, Asif has also consulted with large international and domestic financial institutions on the design and maintenance of their BSA/AML and Sanctions compliance functions, particularly those under enforcement actions with Federal regulators to address process design, policy and procedure development, risk assessments, controls design, and enforcement action remediation.
Asif has also assisted a global Quality Assurance (“QA”) function of a top 5 US Bank in monitoring and assessment of its internal audit activity, effectiveness, and efficiency, and identifying opportunities for improvement. Responsibilities included, but not limited to, performing QA Cold Reviews (scorecard reviews for risk-based audits and issue validation), QA Post-Mortem (targeted) reviews, Thematic Reviews, QA Hot Review (hands-on approach), performance of QA reviews of key internal audit deliverables (internal and external for federal regulators), assisting in the review and improvement of global internal audit methodology, and development and delivery of global QA BSA/AML training.
In addition, Asif led multiple engagements involving large banks under probation by Federal regulators for deficient AML programs and assisted with remediation and audit validation efforts. Prior to joining Protiviti, Asif worked as a foreign exchange consultant responsible for AML and OFAC compliance, and trainer for regulatory requirements, and operational policies. Asif has a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Bernard Baruch College. In addition, Asif holds the Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), and Advanced CAMS-Audit Certifications.
