Domestic Terrorism & Violent Extremism: Evolution and a Current Investigative Perspective

In February and June 2022, Homeland Security issued National Terrorism Advisory Bulletins advising that the primary terrorism-related threat in the U.S. continues to stem from lone offenders or small cells of individuals who are motivated by a range of foreign and/or domestic grievances. The deadly shootings in Uvalde, Buffalo, and other venues in recent months, as well as politically charged trigger events, once again brings home the reality of the ever-present threat of terrorism. This timely session will discuss the evolving threat environment; focus on the transition of domestic radicals from activism to extremism and to terrorism; evolving group threats and threats by lone actors inspired by groups or movements; the decentralized and informal nature of group and individual interaction; and their reliance on social media and funding to carry out violent terrorist acts. The session will also cover best practices in addressing the challenges of identifying and dealing with terrorist financing in the financial ecosystem.
