Sanctions Masterclass: Control Frameworks 101

Sam Cousins is a Senior Associate at ACAMS, where his work includes supporting public-private partnerships and strengthening ACAMS thought leadership pillar through the development of content on sanctions and risk, particularly the Sanctions Masterclass program and Global Monthly Update. Sam's work also focuses on countering ransomware financing, which includes enhancing industry awareness of the anti-financial crime risks associated with ransomware attacks and supporting the mitigation of those risks through policies, training and public-private dialogue.

Prior to ACAMS, Sam worked on the Sanctions Policy team at UK Finance - the trade association for the UK banking sector.

Jared is a senior global economic sanctions risk manager for Bank of America based in New York. He supports all lines of business under the BofA umbrella, including Global Markets, Global Wealth & Investment Management, Global Banking, and Consumer Banking, and has extensive experience in providing guidance on U.S. and international sanctions requirements, performing risk assessments of BofA’s products and services, guiding internal company investigations, drafting government disclosures, and counseling in proposed business transactions.

Prior to joining BofA, Jared was an attorney in the international trade practice at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP in Washington, DC, where his practice focused on U.S. law and policy affecting international trade and business. He advised clients worldwide on diverse compliance and trade matters including economic sanctions, export controls, and anti-bribery and corruption. Jared earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.

Ashley is a sanctions professional and SME with over ten years’ experience. Currently Ashley is a Senior Manager in the Sanctions Advisory team at HSBC UK Bank Plc leading on all regulatory matters. Previously Ashley began her sanctions career in the forensic accountancy team at Grant Thornton working with a number of banks that were affected by UK Sanctions, in particular during the Arab spring.

Throughout her career Ashley has held a variety of sanctions related roles in financial crime teams at financial institutions and in the insurance sector. In 2020 Ashley had the opportunity to undertake a six-month secondment at ACAMS as a Global Sanctions Secondee.

Ms. Sarah Tariq is the Head of Compliance and AFC and DPO at Deutsche Bank, Pakistan where she has previously headed the Transaction Screening & Embargoes team as well. She has a rich experience of 17 years in Banking and Financial Services Industry in Financial Crime Risk, CDD Advisory and Regulatory Compliance with British, German as well as big local banks in Pakistan. Sarah is enthusiastic to fight financial crime and has been instrumental in establishment and implementation of compliance governance structures, transaction monitoring systems as well as policies within the banks. She is keen in keeping abreast with the dynamic regulatory environments including the Crypto and Data Analytics space. Sarah started her career with Relationship Management but moved into financial crime compliance later. She holds an MBA and is a certified AML Specialist from ACAMS and the Institute of Bankers’ Pakistan (IBP). Sarah is one of the first Pakistani to have participated in ACAMS as a speaker on topics related to Compliance and AML.
