Overview
The event will focus on bank BSA/AML programs and the risks that come with banking legal and illegal businesses. With the legalization of Cannabis in some form in most US states, a large marketplace of legal and illegal businesses has formed within the United States. Most banks in the United States are banking businesses that directly or indirectly serving the Cannabis space. For those banks that are aware and actively increasing their Cannabis banking portfolio, effective monitoring and compliance programs are essential to reducing reputational and regulatory risks. Different state laws and an ever-changing federal regulatory environment present further challenges fort these institutions. For banks that are not actively banking Cannabis businesses and do not have adequate controls in place to detect lawful and unlawful Cannabis businesses, the risks can be significant. The legalization of recreational marijuana in 2021 and a slow rollout in New York State created a thriving black market facilitated by businesses that often appear to be in similar industries. Our speakers will address the challenges that banks face, as well as ways to mitigate the risks associated with those businesses. As a member of the Office of Cannabis Management, Chris Chapman works to identify illicit Cannabis businesses and shut them down. Chris can touch on common themes and trends with these unlawful businesses, as well as red flags that banks should be aware of. Jonathan Mack is an experienced BSA Officer at Needham Bank with a Cannabis program in excess of $300 million in deposits. Jonathan can advise banks on best practices for managing a successful Cannabis program while navigating complex regulatory hurdles. Ryne Cornacchia Manages Regulatory Compliance and Cannabis program audits at Wolf & Company, P.C. Prior to joining Wolf & Company, Ryne worked at an institution with a growing Cannabis program. He is ability to assess program risk and recommend practical, compliant solutions and internal controls enables financial institutions to maintain an effective Cannabis program. Tony Repanich is the President and CEO of Shield Compliance, a software company that transforms how financial institutions manage risk, comply with regulations, and satisfy operational demands associated with serving the legal cannabis market.
