Cryptoasset General Awareness

As defined by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a cryptoasset (or virtual asset) refers to “any digital representation of value that can be digitally traded, transferred, or used for payment.” Cryptoassets serve to generate, store, move, and exchange value for investment, development, and purchasing.

Cryptoassets have many characteristics of both currencies and commodities. Types of cryptoassets include:

• Cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, ether, and altcoins
• Stablecoins, which are cryptocurrencies that are linked to other currencies or commodities, like the US dollar
• Privacy coins, which are cryptocurrencies that ensure anonymity, like Monero and Zcash
• Tokens, which are cryptocurrencies that are built on top of an existing blockchain, like ERC-20 tokens, that make up various categories like utility tokens, security tokens, NFTs, and other types of tokens
