CLE Accreditation

Continuing legal education (CLE), also known as mandatory or minimum continuing legal education (MCLE) or continuing professional development, consists of professional education for attorneys that takes place after their initial admission to the bar.

CLE accreditation is given on a state-by-state basis, each with its own rules and regulations indicating what qualifies for CLE credit. There is no nationwide accreditation since the MCLE programs are administered by the state supreme courts through a special CLE commission or board.

A CLE provider seeking MCLE accreditation of its programs must apply to each state individually. Individual attorneys may also request accreditation from their particular states after the program has taken place by providing course materials, a special application, and possibly a small fee.

MCLE states determine CLE credit hours by dividing the running time of instructional programs by either 60 or 50 minutes.

The following states have a 60-minute credit hour:

AK, AL, AZ, AR, CA, DE, GA, ID, IL, IN, IA, KY, LA, ME, MN, MS, MT, NH, NV, NC, ND, NM, OH, OR, PA, PR, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA and WY.

The following states have a 50-minute credit hour:

CO, FL, GU, KS, MO, NY, OK, RI, VI, WV and WI.

The following states observe reciprocity for continuing education:

FL, NJ, NY, CA and NV.

ACAMS seeks accreditation through states where its conferences are hosted. Individuals seeking accreditation through other states will need to apply directly with that state.

Some states do not require their attorneys to complete continuing legal education hours. Please inquire with your state bar to determine if this is the case for you.
