As the “Virtual Currency Chief” within the New York Department of Financial Services’ Research & Innovation Division, Peter leads the Virtual Currency Unit. In that role, he is responsible for leading a team of more than 60 staff in the end-to-end licensing and supervisory process for virtual currency entities, including through applications, ongoing monitoring, and onsite regulatory examinations. During his time at DFS, has developed policy guidance for the virtual currency industry, including around stablecoins, blockchain analytics, and custodial requirements, and helped to streamline the team’s applications and supervisory processes. Pete holds a Master of Business Administration and Master of Global Policy Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to his current position at the Department, Pete worked at Promontory Financial Group, an IBM Company, where he helped build the company’s digital assets practice, and advised government agencies, banks, custodians, and FinTech companies to develop supervisory and risk management best practices around digital assets.
