Benner
Derek N. Benner is the Managing Director for federal law enforcement and commercial programs for Thomson Reuters Special Services, LLC. Using a unique fusion of information, expertise, and technology, TRSS partners with federal government agencies and commercial clients to support their critical missions and empower data for good.
Derek joined TRSS following a 30 year career in federal law enforcement, including serving as the Executive Associate Director (EAD) for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), an organization with more than 7,100 special agents, over 210 other field offices throughout the United States, and 80 overseas locations in 53 countries. Derek focused HSI resources on combatting financial crimes, fraud, and scams and investigating crimes against vulnerable populations such as human trafficking and crimes of exploitation. Derek led the design and development of the HSI Innovation Lab and the DHS Center to Combat Human Trafficking. Most recently, he designed and implemented Operation Stolen Promise to combat stimulus/economic fraud and supply chain vulnerabilities during the COVID 19 pandemic.
Derek also served as the Deputy EAD for HSI, Assistant Director of Domestic Operations with oversight of HSI’s domestic field offices, and Special Agent in Charge for HSI in San Diego, CA. Derek began his law enforcement career with the U.S. Customs Service in 1991, worked at the San Ysidro Port of Entry as a Customs Inspector, and worked as a Marine Enforcement Officer and a Special Agent with the U.S. Customs Service’s Office of Investigations in San Diego.
