Almost a decade after the Department of the Treasury published its first National Terrorist Financing Risk Assessment in 2015, security threats at home overtook those from abroad. The 2024 NFTRA identified domestic violent extremists as the primary terrorism threat to the United States. And while domestic extremists, like their overseas counterparts, need money to carry out their campaigns, the two groups differ significantly in their sources of funds, the sophistication of their financing methods and the challenges they pose for law enforcement. Understanding these differences can help financial institutions help law enforcement disrupt this growing threat at home.
