What Time to Arrive at the Test Center

Plan to arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled examination to allow time for check-in procedures.  Candidates who are late in arriving may not be allowed to test.

Candidates are advised that start times at the test centers may vary. Candidates should check with their test center for accurate start times.

What to Bring to the Test Center

To ensure the integrity of the testing process, a number of security procedures and measures are in place from the check-in process to inside the testing station.

During the check-in, the candidate must provide one form of current and valid government-issued identification, bearing a photograph and a signature. Acceptable forms of primary identification include: driver's license, state-issued identification card or passport, or military identification.   The name on the identification must match the name during registration.

Candidates should bring corrective lenses or hearing aids if they are required for test taking.

Candidates are not permitted to bring food or drink into the testing area of the center. If candidates require food or drink during the testing period, they may request an unscheduled break that will be charged against the allocated test session during which the break is taken.

Please be further advised that due to security regulations, candidates are not permitted to bring any personal effects into the testing area of the test center. During the check-in process, proctors will ask all candidates to place personal property in secure lockers for which they will be given keys. Items such as calculators, PDAs, digital watches, cell phones, pagers, notebooks, reference materials, and DVD and CD players are not permitted in the testing area of the center and should be placed in the secure lockers provided at the center.

Check-In

The experience begins when the candidate enters the reception/waiting area of the testing center. Candidates are strongly advised to arrive at least 30 minutes in advance of the scheduled exam.  Once in the reception area, test takers will be asked to sign in.  Then the proctor will begin the check-in process. First, the proctor will check the test taker’s identification.

As security is an important component of the testing procedure, all personal items must remain outside the testing room during the administration of the examination.  The candidate will be given a key to a locker to secure personal belongings outside the testing area.

Testing Experience

Candidates will be escorted to their designated workstation.

Should a test taker have questions during the exam or require an unscheduled break, or need to remove his or her jacket or sweater, he/she should simply raise their hand and the proctor will come over immediately.

While noise levels are very minimal, orange headphones are available to help block out any possible surrounding noise. For example, a test taker in the cubicle next to you may be required to type answers and the typing may be disturbing to another test taker. The orange headphones are useful to block out all noise.

As a security measure, in the event that a candidate requires a break, the candidate must see the proctor who will capture a digital fingerprint of the candidate before leaving for the break and upon returning from the break.

About the Exam on Exam Day

  1. The CAMS examination contains 120 multiple choice questions. Candidates will have three and a half hours to complete the examination. Additional time will not be allowed.  There are no scheduled breaks during the examination.  Candidates must have the permission of the test center proctor to leave the examination room.
  2. There is no penalty for guessing.  Avoid leaving any questions unanswered to maximize your chances of passing.  It is better to guess than to leave a question unanswered.
  3. No electronic devices are permitted in the examination room, including telephones, digital watches, PDA’s or signaling devices such as pagers and alarms. Calculators are not permitted in the examination room.  Examination questions are designed so that computations can be completed without a calculator within the time permitted.
  4. No questions concerning the content of the examination may be asked during the testing period.  It is the responsibility of each candidate to read the directions given on the computer-based testing screen and listen carefully to the instructions given by the proctor.
  5. Purses, bags, and coats are not allowed in the examination room.  If you wear a jacket/coat in the examination room, it must be worn at all times.  If you do need to store additional items (i.e. purses, coats, etc), lockers will be provided at no cost.
  6. At the end of the examination, the candidate will receive exam scores within seconds.  The candidate may print these results and take the printout with them.

The proctor reserves the right to dismiss a candidate from the examination for any of the following reasons:

  • If the candidate’s admission to the examination is unauthorized.
  • If a candidate creates a disturbance, is abusive, or is otherwise uncooperative.
  • If a candidate gives or receives help, or is suspected of doing so.
  • If a candidate attempts to remove examination materials or notes from the examination room.
  • If a candidate is discovered in possession of an electronic communication or recording device.
